Weekly Working Hours

Regular working hours are limited to 40 hours per week. Including overtime, the average number of hours should not exceed 48 hours over a four month period. the maximum number of hours that an employee can work annually is 200 hours. Consent must be sought before an employer can exceed this limit. Individual agreements/CBAs should be checked for overtime rates, but hours exceding regular working time could be paid at 50-100% of the regular wage.

Medical Benefits

Medical benefits provide that day 1 of sick leave is unpaid, while days 2 to 14 are paid by the employer at 80% of the employee’s salary. After day 14, sick leave is paid by the state.

Probationary Periods

The probationary period is up to 6 months.

Termination Notice

The termination notice period is as follows: for less than 2 years of employment, 1 month’s notice is required; for 2 to 4 years of employment, 2 months’ notice is required; and one additional month is added for every two years of employment, up to a maximum of six months.

Severance

There is no legal mandate for severence pay on a standard termination of employment. However, there may be specific situations where employees may become eligible for severence payments. If applicable and the employee becomes entitled to a severence payment this will be determined by a Collective Bargaining Agreement or a termination agreement with a negotiated severence between the parties.
